BA Speaker chairs meeting regarding rehabilitation project of Pat Feeder Canal

Balochistan Assembly meets today to debate key issues

QUETTA: Balochistan Assembly BA Speaker Captain (retd) Abdul Khaliq Khan Achakzai has taken stern action against contractors for inordinate delays in the Pat Feeder Canal rehabilitation project, directing the recovery of advance payments and demanding a full financial accounting .

Presiding over a high-level meeting, the Speaker was informed that despite the allocation of Rs 65 billion and an initial release of Rs 11 billion as a mobilization advance, contractors have failed to start practical work on the site. Parliamentary Secretary Abdul Majeed Badini emphasized that the canal is a “red line” and a lifeline for local farmers, with the delays causing serious public concern .

MPA Tariq Khan Magsi asserted that while the tender process was complete and funds were released, the contractors had not begun work and must be held accountable . The Project Director reported that approvals and tendering were finished, but the project faces obstacles including encroachments, security issues, and utility transfers on the Sindh portion of the canal.

Speaker Achakzai declared that public money must be protected and ordered the immediate withdrawal of 50% of the mobilization advance given to the contractors . He warned that the contractors could be summoned before the assembly and set a deadline of October 20, 2025, for the submission of a complete report on the project’s financial and operational details, including the use of mobilization funds . The meeting concluded with a resolve from all members that no further delays would be tolerated on this vital public-interest project .
