Arrest before Ramadan? senior analyst’s claim sparks new political storm

ISLAMABAD: The political debate has been triggered following claims by senior journalist and well-known political analyst Hassan Ayub, who has suggested that Alima Khan may soon face arrest, potentially after February 8 and before the start of Ramadan.

In this sense, Ayub stated that the legal process in the case has entered its final phase, leaving little room for delay or procedural flexibility. Ayub also referred to a high-level meeting of the united opposition held in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where strong criticism was directed at the provincial government.

The participants reportedly argued that no provincial budget since 2013 had been passed strictly in accordance with constitutional and legal requirements, calling the issue a serious constitutional concern.

Ayub pointed to Dr. Ibadullah as a rising political figure, while noting that his opponents are equally strategic and active, even organizing political rallies within their own constituencies.

This evolving contest, he said, indicates deeper shifts within the province’s political structure.

In this regard, Ayub offered sharp criticism of the party’s leadership. He mentioned that the party should already be searching for a new “front-facing political figure,” suggesting that most individuals elevated in the past had failed to deliver, with the notable exception of Pervez Khattak.

Ayub further revealed that during a recent meeting in Islamabad of the Tehreek Tahafuz-e-Aain Pakistan, discussions centered on whether negotiations with the government should be initiated. However, he noted that no clear decision has yet emerged, indicating internal divisions and uncertainty within the movement.

Ayub was categorical, asserting that such a partnership is unlikely due to what he described as a decisive “veto power” held by Alima Khan.
