Alyssa Healy announces retirement from cricket

SYDENY: Australian women’s cricket captain Alyssa Healy has confirmed that she will step away from international cricket following the upcoming multi-format series against India.

The 35-year-old shared that the decision comes with mixed emotions, but she believes the timing is right to bring her illustrious career to an end.

Healy, who made her international debut in 2010, has been a key figure in Australia’s dominance for more than a decade.

She played a vital role in two ODI World Cup victories and six T20 World Cup titles, later assuming the captaincy in 2023 after Meg Lanning’s retirement.

While she remains deeply connected to the game, Healy explained that her competitive drive has gradually faded.

Throughout her career, she established herself as one of the most destructive batters and finest wicketkeepers in women’s cricket.

She amassed over 3,500 runs in ODIs, more than 3,000 runs in T20 internationals, and recorded 275 dismissals behind the stumps, including a record number of dismissals in women’s T20Is.

Healy will play her final international matches in three ODIs and one Test against India in February and March, having already retired from T20 internationals.

Despite the rapid growth of women’s cricket during her career, her farewell Test will mark just her 11th appearance in the longest format.

Her leadership highlights include guiding Australia to a historic 16–0 series whitewash of England.

Tributes poured in following her announcement, including praise from Australia’s Prime Minister and Cricket Australia officials, who hailed her as a legend and a transformative figure in the sport.

Beyond the field, Healy has also impressed as a cricket commentator, earning widespread praise for her sharp analysis during recent broadcasts.

Fans and experts alike regard her as one of the greatest ambassadors and players in the history of women’s cricket.
