ISTANBUL: Turkish authorities have arrested 18 Afghan migrants in the Edirne province as they tried to illegally cross into Europe.
According to Turkish news agencies and reports from sources like Khaama Press, the group, including women and children was detained during a border operation aimed at preventing irregular crossings via land routes toward European countries.
The migrants were subsequently transferred to relevant migration management centers for deportation proceedings.
Edirne is considered a key transit point for migrants attempting to reach Europe, with thousands attempting to pass through the area each year.
According to statistics from Turkey’s Directorate General of Migration Management, more than 152,000 irregular migrants were detained nationwide last year, including over 42,000 Afghan nationals.
