40 Afghan refugees arrested in Quetta crackdown

Quetta: Following the expiration of the deadline for Afghan refugees to voluntarily return to their homeland, the district administration has launched operations in the Saryab subdivision.

According to Assistant Commissioner Saryab, Masoor Ahmed, 40 Afghan refugees have been detained during the operation, while four shops were sealed.

The administration stated that strict action is being taken against those refugees who failed to comply with the government order.

During the operation, electricity connections to several houses belonging to Afghan nationals were also disconnected.

Officials confirmed that these measures are being carried out under the directives of the federal government to ensure the repatriation of individuals residing illegally in Pakistan.

Pakistan has maintained that the repatriation of Afghan refugees is a legal and security-driven process rather than a political move.

The government argues that for over four decades, Pakistan has hosted millions of Afghan nationals, providing shelter, healthcare, and education despite its own economic challenges.

However, with increasing security concerns, cross-border militancy, and economic pressures, Islamabad insists that undocumented Afghans must return home through a structured and humane process.

The authorities have clarified that the policy targets only those without valid documentation, not registered refugees under UNHCR protection.

Pakistan continues to emphasize voluntary repatriation under international norms but asserts that the country can no longer bear the burden of illegal stay.

The government has also urged Afghanistan and the international community to cooperate in ensuring a safe and dignified return for all Afghans residing illegally in Pakistan.

Pakistan has made it clear on numerous occasions that the country has hosted the Afghan refugees for over four decades.

Pakistan now wants the Afghan nationals to peacefully return to their country and play their role for the rehabilitation and development of Afghanistan.
