ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Navy Commemorates Navy Day observed Navy Day on Tuesday to pay tribute to the heroes of the 1965 war and honour the courage, sacrifice and professional excellence of naval personnel who defended the country against a numerically larger adversary.
According to a statement issued by the military’s media wing, Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), Pakistan Navy Commemorates Navy Day highlighted the bravery of naval warriors during the 1965 war and the legacy carried forward by successive generations of the Pakistan Navy.

Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf, in his message, said historic Operation SOMNATH demonstrated how determination, courage and professional capability could enable a maritime force to achieve significant results despite numerical and material limitations. He said the legacy of the operation continues to be reflected in the Pakistan Navy’s role in deterring the Indian Navy during Marka-e-Haq.

The commemorations began with the recitation of the Holy Quran and special prayers for the martyrs. Admiral Naveed Ashraf also laid a floral wreath at the Martyrs Monument at Naval Headquarters in Islamabad and met families of martyrs, recognising their sacrifices and resilience. Similar ceremonies were held across the country.
On the Pakistan Navy Commemorates Navy Day the Pakistan Navy recalled its actions during the 1965 war, including attacks on shore installations at Dwarka, where an Indian radar station and radio beacon were reportedly destroyed. The submarine Ghazi was also highlighted for its role as a formidable deterrent during the 1965 war.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif separately paid tribute to Pakistan Navy officers, sailors and civilians. Zardari described Operation SOMNATH as a demonstration of bravery and tenacity, while Shehbaz Sharif said September 8 remains a reminder of the courage and determination displayed by the Navy during the 1965 war.
The leaders expressed confidence that the Pakistan Navy would continue to uphold its traditions and perform its responsibilities with courage, honour and distinction.
