ISLAMABAD: Pakistan played an important mediating role in reducing tensions between the United States and Iran and helped bring the two sides to the negotiating table, as per the report published by South Asian Voices.
The policy platform, which focuses on security, political and economic developments in South Asia, said Pakistan established communication between Washington and Tehran at a critical stage when tensions had escalated sharply and both sides had suffered significant losses.
In this regard, as per the analysis, Islamabad’s diplomatic engagement helped bring a major global power and an important regional power into direct negotiations.
It described Pakistan’s role as a notable diplomatic effort at a time when several major powers, including China, France, Germany, India and the United Kingdom, had also been unable to achieve a similar breakthrough.
The analysis said negotiations between US and Iranian representatives in Islamabad continued for more than 20 hours, making the talks one of the highest-level instances of direct contact between the two countries since the 1979 Iranian Revolution.
Meanwhile, it noted that the prolonged negotiations demonstrated the importance of sustained diplomatic engagement despite the deep differences between Washington and Tehran.
Pakistan’s role, according to the analysis, indicated Islamabad’s effort to facilitate dialogue rather than take sides in the dispute.
The policy platform further observed that both the United States and Iran subsequently accused each other of violating the ceasefire arrangements.
However, neither side completely abandoned the negotiating process, indicating that diplomatic channels remained open despite continued disagreements.
The analysis cautioned against holding the mediator responsible for the failure of negotiations when the parties themselves remained divided over key issues.
It argued that the continuation of dialogue, despite accusations and setbacks, showed that Pakistan’s mediation had created an avenue for direct engagement.
