London: Young female recruits at a British military training college have leveled serious allegations of sexual assault, harassment, and misconduct against senior personnel.
According to a BBC report, four former trainees at the military academy in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, claimed they faced sexual violence and harassment during their training at the age of 17.
One female recruit alleged that she was gang-raped by fellow military personnel for several hours, which ultimately led her to leave the army.
The affected women stated that the institution fosters an environment of misogyny, sexual misconduct, and violence against women.
North Yorkshire Police received 16 complaints regarding sexual offenses related to the military college over a one-year period, including allegations of sexual assault, voyeurism, and inappropriate behavior.
Ministry of Defence data shows that between January 2018 and June 2025, 176 complaints of inappropriate sexual behavior were logged at the institution, with 32 involving senior permanent staff and 144 involving young trainees.
A survivor shared that fellow soldiers locked her in a room and forced themselves on her, holding her captive for hours.
The mother of another victim stated that her daughter faced continuous sexual harassment at the college, to the extent that due to a broken door lock, she had to sleep across her bedroom door at night to protect herself.
The victims alleged that some training officers used derogatory and demeaning language toward women, grading their appearances and making inappropriate comments.
Over the past five years, a few adult training personnel from the facility have been convicted of physical and sexual violence by court-martial. Following the emergence of this scandal, Member of Parliament Emma Lewell-Buck demanded an immediate and independent investigation, stating that any other institution facing such issues would have been shut down for a full inquiry.
The British Army described the allegations as extremely serious and concerning, emphasizing that criminal and unacceptable behavior has no place in the military, and noting that reforms and independent reporting systems have been introduced to support victims.
Concerns regarding the safety of women in the British military have been raised previously, with a government review highlighting that a significant number of female personnel have experienced inappropriate sexual behavior.
