President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning that the United States will soon launch an attack on Iran’s nuclear facility located in the mountains of Natanz, escalating tensions between the two nations.
Speaking to reporters during a meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun at the White House, Trump stated that the strike on the fortified Iranian site is imminent and that Iranian forces would be unable to prevent it. He framed the potential action as a continuation of his administration’s hardline policy against Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.
President Trump asserted that had he not terminated the “nuclear deal” brokered by the Obama administration, Israel would not exist today. He claimed that the agreement would have paved the way for Iran to develop nuclear weapons, posing an existential threat to the Jewish state. He further argued that had American B-2 bombers not targeted Iranian nuclear sites a year ago, Iran would have already achieved nuclear capability, jeopardizing not only Israel but also many other countries in the Middle East.
Trump touted the effectiveness of U.S. military operations, stating that they have reduced Iranian military capabilities to an unprecedented degree. While acknowledging that Iran has caused “some damage” in Jordan, he suggested that this would not have been possible without the support of what he termed “other operators,” though he declined to elaborate on who or what he meant by that phrase.
The President also addressed the possibility of diplomatic engagement, saying that Iran is eager to meet with the U.S. to end the conflict due to the severe damage it is facing. However, he made it clear that the United States has no desire to hold talks with the Iranian leadership at this time.
When asked about potential repercussions for his political standing, Trump speculated that Iran may be attempting to harm his and the Republican Party’s chances in the upcoming November congressional elections by threatening the strategic Strait of Hormuz. He insisted that regardless of such efforts, he will “do what is right.” He downplayed the electoral impact of a potential conflict with Iran, stating he does not believe the war will have any effect on his political fortunes.
