KARACHI: Karachi Port has set a new national record in container handling, processing more than 2.651 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) before the end of the current fiscal year, officials said.
Authorities said the milestone highlights the port’s expanding role in Pakistan’s trade and its growing importance in regional maritime commerce.
Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar said the performance reflects rising business confidence in Pakistan’s maritime sector. He said it also shows the sector’s increasing contribution to national trade activity.
He credited Karachi Port Trust (KPT) employees, including officers and operational staff, for achieving the record. He said their efforts helped maintain smooth and efficient port operations.
KPT Chairman Admiral Shahid Ahmed said Karachi Port continues to serve as the country’s main trade gateway. He said reforms and investments in modern infrastructure have improved efficiency and increased cargo handling capacity.
He added that container and cargo movement has increased significantly due to operational improvements and better management systems.
Karachi Port remains Pakistan’s largest seaport and a key driver of economic activity. It handles machinery, petroleum products, raw materials, and consumer goods.
The port also supports national industry by ensuring smooth cargo flow across supply chains. It connects Pakistan to major global shipping routes across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and Africa.
