Hungary’s incoming prime minister, Peter Magyar, has said the country’s withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC) will be halted, allowing the arrest of individuals wanted by the court if they enter Hungarian territory.
The remarks were made during a press conference in Budapest. It was stated that the position had also been conveyed to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
It was said that if Hungary remains a member of the ICC, any individual sought by the court and entering the country would be detained in accordance with the law.
An arrest warrant had been issued by the ICC in 2024 against Netanyahu over alleged war crimes in Gaza.
Former prime minister Viktor Orbán had announced last year that Hungary would withdraw from the ICC, citing disagreement with the warrant against Netanyahu.
The withdrawal had been scheduled to take effect on June 2. The decision will now be halted by the incoming government, Magyar said.
