ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is set to reactivate its railway link with Iran soon, a move aimed at strengthening trade, economic, and travel connectivity in the region, Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi said.
In a statement, he said the project could later be expanded and linked with Europe through a broader rail network. Pakistan could be developed into an international transit hub, he added.
Abbasi said progress had already been made in the past on various phases of the project, particularly in border connectivity and freight transport at the technical level. He said the work would now be accelerated and completed on a priority basis.
He also said rehabilitation and upgradation work was underway on the 900-kilometre Rohri–Nokundi section and the 87-kilometre Nokundi–Taftan section. The route would provide Pakistan with an effective rail link to the Iranian border and support logistics and trade in the region.
The minister said an improved railway system was essential for the national economy. A strong rail network would improve domestic connectivity and expand regional trade, he added.
