CHAMAN: Afghanistan fired mortar shells into Pakistani territory along the Chaman-Wesh border crossing, triggering a heavy exchange of fire between the two sides, Pakistani officials said Monday.
The incident occurred on the volatile border between Afghanistan’s Kandahar province and Pakistan’s Balochistan province. According to officials, Afghan forces launched mortar bombs that landed inside Pakistani territory near the busy Chaman-Wesh crossing point.
Following the initial shelling, a heavy exchange of fire was reported, with both sides using small arms and heavy weapons. Pakistani officials confirmed the cross-border attack but have not yet released any casualty figures or details of material damage.
The Chaman border has witnessed periodic skirmishes in the past over disputes related to border fencing and civilian movement. The Wesh-Chaman crossing is one of the two main border points between Pakistan and Afghanistan, the other being Torkham in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Pakistani authorities have not yet issued an official statement on whether any retaliatory action was taken. Further details are awaited.
