WASHINGTON : President Donald Trump announced that negotiations with Iran are currently underway in Islamabad, while simultaneously declaring that America has “completely defeated” Tehran and won the war.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trump offered a mixed assessment of the talks, stating that a deal with Iran may or may not materialize — and that the outcome ultimately does not matter to him.
“A deal may be reached, it may not be,” Trump said. “Whether the negotiations are successful or not, it does not matter to me.”
The President then made a series of sweeping claims about the state of conflict with Iran, asserting that the United States has emerged victorious.
“America has completely defeated Iran,” Trump said. “America has won this war.”
The remarks come despite ongoing diplomatic engagement between the two nations, hosted by Pakistan’s capital. Trump did not provide details on the status of the talks or which officials are participating.
The President also expressed concern over the presence of mines in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments.
“We have mine-clearing machinery that is cleaning the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump said, without offering specifics on the timeline or scope of the operation.
In a sharp warning to Beijing, Trump said any Chinese supply of weapons to Iran would result in severe consequences.
“If China supplies weapons to Iran, it will have to face big problems,” the President said.
Chinese officials have not yet responded to Trump’s remarks. Iran has also not commented on the President’s claim that the U.S. has “won the war.”
The Strait of Hormuz has been a flashpoint for tensions in the region for years, with past incidents involving mines, tanker seizures, and military confrontations between U.S. and Iranian forces.
