ISLAMABAD: The United States and Iran are underway in the federal capital today, with Pakistan playing a mediating role as delegations from both sides engage in discussions on complex and sensitive issues.
These talks are being viewed as a significant diplomatic effort following Pakistan’s sustained and effective engagement to bring both parties to the table. The foundation of the negotiations rests on separate proposals presented by both sides. Iran has submitted a 10-point framework, while the United States has proposed a 15-point plan.
The most prominent issue under discussion is Iran’s nuclear program. The United States is seeking firm assurances that Iran will refrain from developing nuclear weapons, limit uranium enrichment, and comply with strict monitoring by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
As far as the economic sanctions are concerned, Iran is demanding the immediate lifting of international sanctions and the release of its financial assets held abroad. Meanwhile, the United States is advocating for a phased easing of sanctions, conditional upon Iran’s compliance with agreed commitments.
The situation in the Strait of Hormuz is another critical topic. Iran seeks recognition of its role in the strategically important waterway, whereas the United States insists on ensuring that the passage remains secure and open for global trade.
Iran’s ballistic missile program remains another sensitive issue, with the United States seeking limitations on Iran’s defense capabilities, a demand Tehran views as interference in its sovereign rights.
Additionally, recent tensions following reported attacks since late February, as well as the question of damages incurred during that period, are also under consideration.
