KABUL: At least 17 people have been killed and 26 others injured due to severe flooding, landslides, and thunderstorms across various parts of Afghanistan in the past 24 hours, according to Afghan officials.
This is the latest incident of heavy casualties caused by extreme weather conditions in the country this season.
Officials warned that the death toll may rise further as teams from the National Disaster Management Authority are still assessing the affected areas.
The authority’s spokesperson, Yusuf Hamad, said in a statement that 13 out of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces have been affected, mostly in the western, central, and northwestern regions.
Hamad added that 147 homes were completely or partially destroyed, around 80 kilometers of roads were washed away, and significant damage was caused to agricultural land and irrigation systems.
