QUETTA: The Balochistan government has issued a threat alert for several political leaders, citing security concerns, officials said.
The alert specifically mentions members of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) and other political figures. It calls for protection of Senator Maulvi Abdul Wasay, the JUI Balochistan chief, and Maulvi Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, the party’s central general secretary.
The notice also identifies opposition leaders in the Balochistan Assembly, including Mir Younus Aziz Zehri, Asghar Khan Tarin, and Zubid Reki, as being at risk.
Authorities have instructed all relevant agencies to take immediate security measures. The alert has been sent to the Frontier Corps, police, commissioners, and district administrations. Security reviews of the leaders’ residences and offices have been ordered.
JUI Response
JUI spokesperson Aslam Ghori criticized the alert. He said it reflects the government’s failure to maintain law and order.
Ghori claimed that only JUI members face genuine threats in the province. He accused the provincial government and the “fake chief minister” of endangering public safety.
He said the alert revives wounds from the 2024 disputed elections and called it a political slap in the face for the party.
Ghori added that the warning appears to be an excuse to keep JUI away from the upcoming by-elections in Khuzdar and Kalat. He described it as pre-election manipulation.
He warned that if elected leaders are not secure, the safety of ordinary citizens is also at risk. Ghori said the party sees attempts to rig elections in Khuzdar and Kalat using old tactics.
