China sends envoy to Kabul to mediate Pakistan-Afghan tensions

KABUL :China has launched a diplomatic effort to de-escalate rising tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, marked by a rare visit from its special envoy to Kabul amid ongoing cross-border clashes.

China’s special representative for Afghanistan, Yu Xiaoyong, traveled to the Afghan capital on Sunday, where he met with Taliban-led government’s Foreign Minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi. The visit comes after ten days of heightened hostilities between the two neighbors.

According to a statement from the Afghan Foreign Ministry, the two officials discussed bilateral cooperation and the deteriorating regional situation. During the meeting, the Chinese envoy urged the Afghan government to resolve the conflict with Pakistan through diplomacy and negotiations.

Yu Xiaoyong emphasized that ending the tensions between Islamabad and Kabul is “necessary for the stability and security of the region.” He added that China remains in contact with both countries to improve the situation.
