KOHAT: Pakistan’s leading energy company, Oil & Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL), has discovered new oil and gas reserves in the Baragzai X-01 (Silent) exploratory well in Kohat district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the company announced on Monday. Officials said the discovery is expected to help meet the country’s growing energy needs.
According to media reports, OGDCL informed the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) that under the Nashpa Exploration License, the company holds a 65 percent stake in the joint venture, with Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) holding 30 percent and Government Holdings (Private) Limited (GHPL) 5 percent. The venture successfully discovered hydrocarbons in the Samana Suk and Shinawari formations.
During a cased-hole drill stem test, the well produced 3,100 barrels of oil and 8.15 million standard cubic feet of gas per day. The Baragzai X-01 well was drilled on December 30, 2024, reaching a total depth of 5,170 meters into the Kingriali formation. Previous tests by OGDCL had already confirmed oil and gas in the Kingriali and Datta formations.
OGDCL said the latest discovery will boost national energy production and add to both the company’s hydrocarbon reserves and Pakistan’s overall energy resources.

The announcement comes a day after Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) reported gas discoveries from the Bilitang-1 exploratory well, also located in Kohat, highlighting the region’s growing significance for domestic energy production.
Earlier this month, Oil and gas reserves have been discovered in the Nashpa Block in Kohat.
According to OGDCL, the reserves were found in the Nashpa Block of Kohat, and the company has formally notified the Stock Exchange about the discovery.
OGDCL stated that the well is expected to produce 2,280 barrels of crude oil per day, while the Barghzai X-1 well will supply 5.6 million standard cubic feet of gas per day.
The discovery is expected to help bridge the gap between the country’s energy supply and demand.
This is the first time that oil and gas have been discovered in the Kingriali Formation of the Nashpa Block.
OGDCL is the operator of the discovery with a 65% share, while PPL holds a 30% stake and PEL holds 5%.
