Severe Weather Grounds 700 Flights at Schiphol Airport

AMSTERDAM: Severe snowfall and strong winds have hit Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, one of Europe’s busiest hubs, forcing the cancellation of hundreds of flights.

Air traffic has been severely disrupted. Thousands of passengers have been left stranded. Authorities have warned that more cancellations could follow through the day.

At least 700 flights were cancelled on Wednesday due to heavy snow and high winds, airport authorities said. Flight operations had already been affected for several days by poor weather, but fresh snowfall worsened the situation.

More than 1,000 passengers were forced to spend the night at the airport. Temporary camp beds were provided, and breakfast was arranged in the morning.

Flights were cancelled due to snow-covered runways, poor visibility, and unsafe wind conditions. Takeoffs and landings were deemed unsafe.

Schiphol is one of Europe’s major transit hubs, handling thousands of flights and millions of passengers daily. Even minor weather disruptions are known to cause widespread impact.

Passengers were advised to check flight status with their airlines before traveling to the airport.
