LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has formally initiated the process to add two new teams to the Pakistan Super League (PSL), indicating an important initiative toward the league’s long-anticipated expansion.
The development was announced on Wednesday as officials confirmed that bidding for the 7th and 8th franchises is now open.
Furthermore, the PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, said the league is entering an exciting new phase. He stated that the PSL is “going to be bigger and even better,” focusing on that the inclusion of new teams reflects the league’s growing popularity and commercial potential. Naqvi added that the long-held dream of expanding the PSL is “finally coming true,” mentioning the board’s confidence in the league’s continued success.
Moreover, the announcement comes as the PCB looks to strengthen the PSL’s brand value, broaden its fan base, and create new opportunities for regional representation in the tournament.
The addition of two more teams is expected to increase competition, increase viewership, and attract greater investment into Pakistan’s domestic cricket structure.
In this sense, the official PSL also confirmed the expansion move, calling it “the beginning of a new era.”
The league stated that it is officially inviting bids for the 7th and 8th teams, indicating a major shift as the PSL prepares to move beyond its long-standing six-team format.
Meanwhile, the potential cities or regions being considered for the new teams have not yet been disclosed, PCB officials are expected to outline the bidding criteria and timelines in the coming days.
The board has also indicated that all processes will be conducted transparently and in line with international standards for franchise-based sports leagues.
The move is widely seen as a positive development for Pakistan cricket, offering expanded opportunities for emerging players, coaches, and support staff.
