ZHOB: Unchecked and rampant deforestation is devastating the natural forests of Balochistan, with environmental experts warning of an ecological catastrophe if immediate action is not taken. Daily felling of precious Chilgoza and olive trees in regions like Sherani and Zhob is rapidly depleting forest cover, with government authorities appearing silent spectators.
The destruction is stripping the land of its natural climate moderators and destroying vital wildlife habitats. Environmentalists directly link this loss to intensifying climate change across the province. The rampant tree-cutting is disrupting rainfall patterns, exacerbating drought conditions, and accelerating land erosion, creating a cycle of environmental degradation that threatens agriculture and water resources.
A primary cause of this crisis, according to public circles, is the brazen operation of a “timber mafia.” These groups are reportedly operating without fear or danger due to the inattention of relevant government departments and a critical lack of enforcement at the local level. The government institutions established specifically for forest protection have drawn criticism for their perceived complete silence and inaction in the face of this ongoing plunder.
There is a growing public demand for the Balochistan government to intervene immediately. Citizens and experts are calling for effective steps to halt the deforestation, launch stringent action against the timber mafia, and revitalize tree plantation campaigns to help restore the natural environment.
Experts have issued a stark ultimatum, stating that if timely measures are not implemented, the province’s invaluable natural forests could be completely destroyed within the coming few years. They assert that the responsibility for this potential ecological disaster will fall squarely on the shoulders of the present government, highlighting the urgent need for political will to combat the powerful illegal networks driving the deforestation.
