PESHAWAR: Police on Saturday foiled a terrorist attack on the Matni Police Station in Peshawar’s Hassan Khel area, killing two militants and injuring two others in a swift counteraction.
According to Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Peshawar, Mian Saeed, the terrorists — reportedly backed by India — launched an assault on the police station late Friday night. Police personnel stationed at the facility immediately retaliated, engaging the attackers in a heavy exchange of fire.
“The police responded with full force and successfully neutralized the terrorists before they could inflict major damage,” CCPO Mian Saeed said, confirming the incident.
He added that two of the attackers were killed on the spot, while two others sustained injuries during the gun battle. “Our forces fought bravely and prevented what could have been a major tragedy,” he noted.
Security forces later cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to trace possible accomplices.
Officials said the timely response from police thwarted the attackers’ plan to overrun the station and target security personnel.
The attack marks another attempt by India-backed militants to destabilize Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a province that has witnessed an uptick in cross-border terrorism in recent months.
Authorities have stepped up security in and around police installations across Peshawar following the incident.
Last night, Security forces killed at least five Khawarij, including a suicide bomber, after a deadly overnight attack on a police training centre in Dera Ismail Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, officials said on Saturday. Seven police personnel were martyred in the assault.
Police said heavily armed militants launched the attack around 8:30 pm on Friday, storming the training facility after detonating a suicide bomb at the entrance. Officers stationed inside returned fire, engaging the attackers in a fierce gun battle that lasted several hours.
