Governor Balochistan calls fake news 'a global challenge'

Quetta – Governor Balochistan, Jaffar Khan Mandokhail, has said that the rapid spread of fake news has become a major challenge for governments worldwide, making it difficult to counter rumours and propaganda.

He noted that legislation in this regard remains complex, as it requires striking a delicate balance between curbing misinformation and safeguarding freedom of expression, which is a fundamental right enshrined in every constitution.

Speaking at the opening session of a three-day conference on human rights and media literacy, organised by Individuellands, the Governor stressed that an outright ban on social media could trigger global concerns.

Instead, he suggested that seminars, conferences, and workshops should be utilised to promote responsible media use and raise awareness about the harmful impacts of fake news.

The conference was attended by university professors, media professionals, and members of civil society.

Governor Mandokhail highlighted that while media is essential in daily life, there is also a pressing need to understand information technology and manage the negative aspects of media consumption.

He added that constructive criticism is equally important, as it helps bring about positive reforms.

During the session, participants identified shortcomings of social media but, according to the Governor, failed to present concrete solutions.

He remarked that highlighting symptoms of a problem without providing remedies is not sufficient.

Media, he said, also has countless advantages: it is a powerful source of knowledge, keeps people updated with global developments, and provides university students with rich access to online academic and research material.

Governor Mandokhail acknowledged that traditional newspapers and television channels have lost some of their prominence due to the rise of social media.

Responding to a question, he emphasised that disinformation and fake news inflict serious negative impacts on society, which can only be addressed by encouraging the responsible use of media and fostering positive attitudes among people.

He concluded by urging teachers to play their role in shaping constructive thinking, alongside imparting quality education.
