White House confirms Trump-Shehbaz meeting

WASHINGTON: The White House has officially confirmed that United States President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will hold a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

In this regard, the White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the meeting between the two leaders is part of President Trump’s broader diplomatic engagements during his visit to New York.

She noted that the US administration is expected to take further actions against left-wing groups in the coming days, though she did not elaborate on the nature of those measures.

In this sense, Leavitt also outlined President Trump’s upcoming diplomatic agenda, confirming that he is scheduled to meet leaders from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Türkiye, Pakistan, and Jordan.

In addition, a meeting with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has also been arranged.

The White House spokesperson further revealed that President Trump will engage with leaders from Ukraine, Argentina, and the European Union during the high-level week.

Moreover, as per the Leavitt, President Trump is expected to deliver an important address at the UN General Assembly, where regional security, counterterrorism, and global economic cooperation are likely to feature prominently.

She also disclosed that the U.S. president is expected to sign the TikTok deal later this week, a development being closely watched by international observers.

Additionally, the press secretary noted that President Trump does not support the recent decisions by certain Western countries to formally recognize Palestine as a state, indicating divergence in approach between Washington and some of its European allies.

Meanwhile, the 80th session of the UN General Assembly formally commenced in New York earlier this week, bringing together world leaders, diplomats, and policymakers to deliberate on pressing global challenges.
