Condemnation over Akhtar Mengal’s remarks sparks debate

ISLAMABAD: The recent remarks which are attributed to veteran politician Akhtar Mengal have created wide criticism after he offered sympathies and prayers for individuals linked to terrorism.

The statement of Mengal has drawn strong reactions from political and civil society circles, who argue that such expressions undermine the sacrifices of Pakistan’s martyrs and deeply hurt the families of victims of terrorism.

In this regard, the families of martyrs, particularly those who lost their loved ones in attacks carried out by militant outfits, expressed disappointment over the remarks.

They reminded that thousands of civilians, soldiers, and law enforcement personnel have laid down their lives in the fight against terrorism, which continues to challenge the country’s stability.

Furthermore, civil society activists also underlined that politicians have a duty to strengthen national unity against extremism rather than dilute it with controversial rhetoric.

In this sense, Akhtar Mengal, a key figure in Balochistan’s political landscape, has often voiced concerns about state policies and issues affecting the province. However, critics argue that framing militants as victims blurs the line between legitimate political grievances and acts of terrorism.
