ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan on Tuesday approved the construction of a new state-of-the-art 172-kilometer-long motorway connecting Mansehra, Kaghan, Naran, Jhal Khand, and Chilas (MNJC).
The mega project will serve as a safer, more efficient alternative route to the existing Karakoram Highway (KKH), shortening the travel distance on the KKH by up to 120 kilometers.
The landmark decision was finalized during a high-level meeting of the National Highway Authority (NHA).
The session was attended by Secretary Communications and NHA Chairman, retired Capt.
Asadullah Khan, alongside key officials to modernize the country’s transport infrastructure.
Phase-wise Execution and Structural Highlights
The MNJC Motorway will be completed in two distinct phases:
- Phase I: Construction will stretch from Mansehra through Kaghan and Naran up to Babusar Top.
- Phase II: Construction will span the section from Babusar Top to Chilas.
A major structural highlight of the project is the construction of a 13.5-kilometer-long Babusar Tunnel, which will stand as the longest tunnel in Pakistan.
Designed to accommodate future travel and freight demands, the initial four-lane motorway will possess the capacity to expand into six lanes.
Modern roadside rest areas will be built every 25 to 30 kilometers for commuters, and specialized freight terminals will be strategically established at both ends of the motorway network.
Economic Transformation and Regional Connectivity
Highlighting the geo-economic importance of the project, the federal minister noted that traditional trade routes from the Arabian Sea to China via existing networks are time-consuming and generate immense financial costs. This new corridor will directly link western China to the vital ports of Karachi and Gwadar, offering the fastest, shortest, and most cost-effective transit loop.
Minister Abdul Aleem Khan characterized the infrastructure project as a true “game-changer” for the sustainable development of Gwadar Port and the national economy.
NHA officials have been directed to finalize all technical aspects to ensure the project is delivered within the specified timeline.
