113 killed in May terror attacks; Balochistan most affected

ISLAMABAD: Amid ongoing tensions with India in May, Pakistan also witnessed a surge in terrorist activities, primarily attributed to extremist groups.

The Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), a think tank based in Islamabad, released its monthly report highlighting the scale of violence.

According to the report, 85 terror attacks occurred across the country in May, resulting in 113 deaths, including 52 security personnel, 46 civilians, and four peace committee members. Additionally, 182 people were injured—130 civilians, 47 security officials, and one peace committee member.

Compared to April, there was a 5% rise in terror incidents. Civilian injuries increased by a staggering 145% (from 53 in April to 130 in May), while injuries among security forces dropped by 20%. April saw 81 attacks, whereas May had 85.

Security forces conducted multiple operations, killing 59 militants and losing five personnel. Seven security officials and five militants were injured during these actions.

A total of 52 suspects were arrested in May, while 19 people were abducted by militants. Deaths among security personnel rose by 78% during the month.

Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remained the hardest hit. Balochistan reported 35 attacks, resulting in 51 deaths and 100 injuries, along with 9 abductions.

In the former tribal areas (ex-FATA), 22 attacks led to 45 deaths and 58 injuries. Other Khyber Pakhtunkhwa districts reported 25 attacks with 14 fatalities and 24 injuries.

Sindh witnessed three attacks, killing two civilians and one security officer. Punjab recorded the highest number of arrests, with 39 suspected militants apprehended.
