Government restricts road travel for Arbaeen pilgrims citing security concerns

ISLAMABAD: The Government of Pakistan has decided to temporarily suspend road travel for pilgrims (Zaireen) heading to Iraq and Iran for Arbaeen this year.  The decision, taken after comprehensive consultations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Government of Balochistan, and national security agencies, aims to ensure the safety of pilgrims amid increased regional and domestic security concerns.

The Arbaeen pilgrimage, which indicates the end of the 40-day mourning period following Ashura, traditionally sees tens of thousands of Pakistani Shia pilgrims traveling overland through Balochistan into Iran, and onward to Iraq. However, the volatile security environment along the western border and concerns about potential militant activity have compelled authorities to review and revise their approach this year.

The Ministry of Religious Affairs is expected to coordinate with aviation authorities to increase the number of flights and streamline the visa and documentation process for pilgrims opting to travel by air.  Moreover, the Additional support staff and facilities are also being mobilized at major airports to assist travelers during the busy Arbaeen period.
