ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi to launch the long-awaited Gwadar Safe City project, a major step toward strengthening security infrastructure in the strategic port city.
During a meeting with the Prime Minister, Minister Naqvi briefed him on the newly formulated policy for Pakistani pilgrims visiting holy sites in Iran and Iraq. In response, the Prime Minister directed the Aviation Minister to arrange special flights to facilitate the pilgrims’ travel.
Minister Naqvi also updated the Prime Minister on the current law and order situation in Balochistan, with discussions focusing on enhancing public safety and maintaining peace in the province.
The Gwadar Safe City project, valued at Rs4.96 billion, received approval after nearly a decade of planning. The federal and Balochistan governments are jointly funding the project under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP).
The government plans to enhance public security by installing CCTV cameras and deploying real-time monitoring systems across critical locations in Gwadar. These tools will help law enforcement agencies detect, prevent, and investigate crimes more effectively, ultimately improving safety for both residents and foreign nationals.
Authorities expect to complete the project by June 2026, with about 30% of the work already finished. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to develop Gwadar into a secure, economically vibrant hub as part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
