QUETTA: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather advisory warning of potential flash floods in parts of Balochistan and other northern and central regions of the country due to heavy monsoon rains forecast from Sunday to Monday.
Balochistan is among the vulnerable areas where hill torrents may overflow, particularly in the southern and northeastern zones.
The heavy downpour may trigger flash flooding in local streams and low-lying areas, posing serious risks to life, infrastructure, and mobility in rural districts.
The alert mentioned that intense rainfall is expected to hit areas including Murree, Galiyat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Buner, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Nowshera, Swabi, Mardan, and Islamabad/Rawalpindi, potentially causing flash floods and landslides in hilly terrains.
In this sense, Balochistan authorities have been directed to remain vigilant and take preemptive safety measures to mitigate the impact of floods and mudslides.
In addition to Balochistan, the hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan, northeast Punjab, and Kashmir are also under threat of flooding. The situation is compounded by warnings of landslides and road blockages in elevated areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Galiyat, and Azad Jammu & Kashmir, which may disrupt travel and relief operations during the monsoon spell.
Meanwhile, urban flooding is anticipated in several major cities due to water accumulation in poorly drained areas. These include Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Nowshera, and Peshawar.
The PMD noted that moist currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are steadily entering Pakistan’s atmosphere and are expected to intensify, while a westerly wave will likely affect the upper regions by Sunday evening, increasing the severity of the weather system.
