NEW YORK: Pakistan on Tuesday assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of July, marking its return to the Council’s leadership for the first time since 2013. This is Pakistan’s eighth term on the 15-member Council, and part of its ongoing two-year tenure as a non-permanent member, which began in January 2025 and continues through 2026.
While the UNSC presidency rotates each month and carries no executive powers, it enables the presiding nation to shape the agenda and guide discussions, particularly relevant amid global divisions over crises such as Gaza and Ukraine.
During its presidency, Pakistan is set to lead two major high-level sessions, including the quarterly open debate on the Palestine situation, which is expected to garner broad international focus given the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Pakistan’s leadership at the Council comes at a time of heightened global instability, marked by growing conflicts, complex geopolitical shifts, and mounting threats to international peace. The country aims to use this opportunity to promote a balanced and principled approach in Council deliberations, focusing on transparency, inclusiveness, and effectiveness.
